  • Introduction

The following is a small overview of all Dornier Do 28 and Do 28D Skyservants, and all their subtypes and variants. Included is also a list of all airframes that I am aware of, as well as a list of military users.

A description and a short history of the aircraft type, as well as some pictures might be added at a later time.

Additional information and corrections are as usual very welcome.

If you want to look up Dornier Do 28s in the FAA database, you can use the following FAA Codes. The company, Dornier Flugzeugbau GmbH was bought by Fairchild, and is now named Fairchild-Dornier.

FAA Code (299 = Dornier (and Buecker)):

Altogether, about 120 Do 28, Do 28A and Do 28B were built (c/n: 3xxx). The Do 28 was basically a two-engine version of the earlier Do 27 STOL aircraft series, which itself was based on the Do 25. The single Do 28 (or Do 28A) prototype was powered by two 132 kW / 180 hp engines, and flew for the first time on April 29, 1959, still using a Do 27 wing. The following 59 (or 60) series production Do 28A-1 had two Lycoming IO-540-A1D (190 kW / 255 hp) engines, and a considerably larger wing. The first Do 28A-1 made its maiden flight on March 20, 1960, and series production started the same year.

The next 60 aircraft were built as Do 28B (most as Do 28B-1), which featured a redesigned nose, enlarged tailplane, and an increased wingspan, and used more powerful Lycoming IO-540-A1A5 (215 kW / 294 hp) engines. The first Do 28B-1 flew in April 1963, and series production started in 1964. The Do 28B-2 had turbocharged Lycoming TIO-540 (261 kW / 350 hp) engines for better STOL performance. At least six Do 28s were equipped with EDO floats.

    Dornier Do 28D, Do 28D-1, Do 28D-1/S

About 50 Dornier Do 28D and Do 28D-1 were built (c/n: 4xxx). The Do 28D was similar in layout to the Do 28A and Do 28B, but was considerably larger and heavier. The Do 28D-1 was powered by two Lycoming IGSO-540-A1E piston engines with 283 kW (380 hp). The prototype flew for the first time on February 23, 1966 and the aircraft has room for up to 14 passengers (even though 10 are standard), compared to only 4 (or 6) in the original Do 28. Four Do 28D-1/S were specially equipped for VIP (Very Important Person) or staff transport for the German military.

Dornier Do 28D-2, Do 28D-2T, Do 28D-2/OU, Do 128, Do 128-2, Do 128 TNT, Skyservant

Over 200 Dornier Do 28D-2 (re-designated Do 128-2 in 1980) were built (c/n: 4xxx). The Do 28D-2 also has two Lycoming IGSO-540-A1E 280 kW (380 hp) engines and was specifically developed for the German military (Bundeswehr). The main difference to the earlier Do 28D-1 was its higher gross weight, refined flaps, ailerons, stabilators and leading edge slats. Additionally, equipment that was previously only optional became standard on this model.

One Bundeswehr Do 28D-2 was modified with turboprops as Do 28D-2T, and flew for the first time in this configuration in March 1980, but no other Bundeswehr aircraft were re-engined. Two Marineflieger (Navy) Do 28D-2 were modified as Do 28D-2/OU (Oil Unit) for Oil Spill Search and Environmental Pollution Control. A Maritime Patrol version with a large radom under the nose/forward fuselage, was never sold and only a prototype was built.

Another Do 128-2 was used as testbed for the Dornier TNT (Tragfluegel Neuer Technologie = New Technology Wing) supercritical wing, and was equipped with two Garrett AiResearch TPE 331-5 turboprops (533 kW / with 715 shp). This layout was later also used on the Do 228, which was originally designated Do 28E-1 (15-seat Do 228-100, c/n 7xxx) and Do 28E-2 (19-seat Do 228-200, c/n 8xxx).

    Dornier Do 28D-5X, Do 28D-6X, Do 128-6X, Do 28D-6, Do 128-6, Do 128-6MPA, Turbo-Skyservant

About 22 Do 128-6X, Do 128-6 and Do 128-6MPA with turboprops were built (c/n: 6xxx). The original Do 28-5X TurboSky prototype flew for the first time on April 9, 1978, with two (Avco) Lycoming LTP 101-600-1A turboprops (with 298 kW, 400 shp, de-rated from 447 kW / 600 shp), but the series production Turbo Skyservant, the Do 28D-6 (1980 re-designated Do 128-6) was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney PT6A-110 turboprops (also de-rated to 298 kW or 400 shp) instead. The prototype Do 28D-5X was re-engined accordingly, and flew again for the first time as Do 28D-6X (later re-designated Do 128-6X) on March 4, 1980. The Do 128-6MPA (Maritime Patrol version A) carried a MEL Marec maritime search and patrol radar in a relatively large radom under the nose/front fuselage.

      1 Do 28D-5X prototype (to Do 28D-6X, re-designated Do 128-6X):
